Heartland Green Sheets is sponsored by the Mid-America Regional Council Solid Waste Management District and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources which supports educational projects that promote productive uses of our waste streams. The project is being developed by the Kansas City Design Center with faculty at the University of Kansas School of Architecture and Urban Design. In consultation with many key architects, contractors, developers and prominent organizations such as Kansas City’s American Institute of Architects’ Committee on the Environment and the Heartland Green Builders Association, we determined that a resource was needed to help people evaluate “green” building products. Architects and builders may be encouraged to use recycled-content materials if they knew where they could access information regarding these materials. Firms need a resource that provides current information on products produced regionally, and basic data on what makes a particular product "green." This web-site is currently being developed to provide useful information about regionally-produced, recycled-content building products to architects, contractors, developers and manufacturers in the greater Kansas City metropolitan region. The web-site resource provides information on recycled-content building products within a 500-mile radius surrounding Kansas City. Heartland Green Sheets will focus upon products that are produced within a day’s drive to promote conservation of transportation energy and lessen the environmental impact of the building industry. Identifying materials produced in this region will highlight our innovative, regional companies. Numerous green products exist in the region, but there is no single-source web-site listing that identifies local products for easy access. Heartland Green Sheets is envisioned as a compendium of useful and important information collected from varying sources and organized and correlated so that it can serve and be serviced by diverse users. It will also serve to reveal investigations, development and production of selected recycled-content building products; reveal national and international developments that may be applied to this region; and promote an understanding of the standards for what makes a building product green. If you are a manufacturer of a recycled-content building product in our region or a building specifier that knows of a product that should be added, please contact us and we will add your product to our database. One of our researchers will contact key personnel in your company to review these questions in a brief interview process. Please contact Rebecca Bruce at greensheets@ku.edu to see about including your company on this web-site.
